2019 - 2020 Artist in Residence
Ava P Christl

The Skeena Paintings
Exhibition runs July 11 - August 23

In these new paintings I try to express my personal connection to the land and river of my youth. The locations in the images have been re-imagined through time and memory to express the geography of my northern heart-home
in all it's wonder, mystery and spirit.
In these paintings, I mix memories with observations, reality with imagination, and use multiple panels to show multiple aspects of a particular location. Although the paintings are of specific places, they are located somewhere in the realm of memory and imagination, distorted through time and the vagaries of memory.

100 Days of Solitude

Starting on March 11th, when the pandemic was declared, I began making a small drawing every day. It was a kind of meditation, a way to not only mark the days, but to reflect on what was going on in the world. At 100 days I decided to mount the drawings as a timeline, an historical record. Each drawing is 6" square, graphite on paper.

30 Paintings in 30 Days

A few days after the Covid pandemic was announced, the Jealous Curator in Vancouver put out a call to artists to create something every day for 30 days. I accepted the challenge and made a small painting every day from March 15-April 13.

 Pop-up Drawing Residency

From March 2-6, 2020, I held a drawing residency in the gallery, working on large graphite drawings based on the forest fires I'd witnessed during my travels to, and stay in, the Yukon during the summer of 2019.
People came to visit and watch me work and to see the finished drawings. To my delight, a few people came to draw with me.

Winter Solstice Crown Making Workshop

Picture

For the Winter Solstice on December 21st, I hosted a woodland crown making workshop. A group of women gathered flora from their gardens and from fields and forests, and came together to create these marvelous crowns.

Ava P Christl

Ava was born in Duncan, BC, on Vancouver Island, and moved to northern BC with her family when she was three. She finished high school in Terrace, then moved back to Vancouver Island for a few years. After a few years, she moved to Yellowknife, NWT. Ava left Yellowknife to attend art school, and graduated from NSCAD University in 1986. She then spent a year in Baker Lake, Nunavut managing the Sanavik Printmaking Cooperative. She later relocated to Whitehorse, Yukon where she lived for about 18 years. Ava began her art career during the Whitehorse years and, over time, held public gallery exhibitions across northern and western Canada. During those years she taught drawing and painting in a variety of capacities from after school art programs to artists-in-the-schools to private workshops. Ava sat on the board of the Yukon Arts Centre and was actively engaged in the Yukon arts community through paid work and volunteerism. In the early 2000’s Ava moved south to Victoria, BC where she became a professional cook, an organic gardener, and a student - leaving her full-time art practice for some 10 years. Ava continued to paint throughout and engaged in community arts by starting an annual art walk/studio tour in her Vic West neighbourhood and designing and hosted a number of community arts projects as part of neighbourhood events such as Vic West Fest. Ava began a serious return to her art practice in recent years by seeking out and participating in artists residencies in Canada and the USA.

Ava P Christl holds a BFA from NSCAD University, Halifax, NS and a Certificate in Adult Education from the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC. She has exhibited throughout northern and western Canada including Richmond Art Gallery, Nanaimo Art Galllery, Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery, the Yukon Arts Centre and the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife, NWT. Ava had been artist-in-residence at the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site, the Ted Harrison Cabin (Yukon), Elsewhere Studios in Paonia, Colorado and the Sitka Centre for Art and Ecology near Lincoln City, Oregon, among others. Her works are held in private and public collections across North America including the Yukon Hospital Corporation, the Yukon Government's Permanent Art Collection and the Art Bank of Canada in Ottawa.
